Here is the original building after it was completed in the 1930's.
The materials and construction of the buried building were quite inconsistent with the concrete hospital. When I think about it, the wood structure with beadboard motif was much like many "temporary" buildings that were built during the war (WW2). Possibly this was built on the site of the left garden and later covered with the present triangular structure. Certainly the whole hospital complex was cobbled together at different times over the decades as more room was needed. Anyone who worked on it during the reno days could see that. The basement connected everything underground including AO across the street.
If I recall correctly, GO occupied the ground floor of the left wing and so that was off-limits to us slugs.
