Thank you. Not having studied anything about Cold Fusion, I was under the impression it was an additional ingredient but, yes, with the education that I have had, I should have figured it out myself.

There are some good (and some terrible) youtube docos on the subject if you have a rainy afternoon to fill :)

"A thorium fuel cycle offers several potential advantages over a uranium fuel cycle including much greater abundance on Earth, superior physical and nuclear properties of the fuel, enhanced proliferation resistance, and reduced nuclear waste production. Nobel laureate Carlo Rubbia at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), has worked on developing the use of thorium as a cheap, clean and safe alternative to uranium in reactors. Rubbia states that a tonne of thorium can produce as much energy as 200 tonnes of uranium, or 3,500,000 tonnes of coal." Wiki ('Thorium')

hmm 'cheap clean safe' those words aren't immediately inspiring these days

You still need to start with Uranium 235 in a Thorium breeder reactor. The Thorium is not fissionable in and of itself, but when bombarded with neutrons it captures neutrons and goes to Uranium 233 which IS fissionable, and, like Uranium 235, is critical on delayed neutrons ... that is, neutrons released from the decay of fission products. 99+% of the neutrons from one generation to the next are prompt, that is, produced directly from nuclear fission, but, that there is a significant fraction of a percent of the neutrons that are delayed effectively slows down a generation time of neutrons to about 57 seconds, making a Uranium fueled reactor far more controllable than attempting to make a Plutonium fueled reactor, which is critical on prompt neutrons. The advantage of a Thorium breeder ... separating out U233 from Thorium is far easier than separating out U235 from U238, because it can be done chemically. The result is virtually pure U233, which can then fuel a reactor that is far closer in design to a Navy nuclear power plant, which requires highly enriched fuel. The Navy design allows for extreme transients. Furthermore, it can stay operational inspite of various casualty conditions such as a steam leak or loss of a feed water pump etc... there is virtually nothing that could happen to the steam plant side that would cause an automatic shutdown of the reactor. If the Japanese nuclear plants were similar to the Navy design, the worst outcome would have been an automatic shutdown of the reactor (Reactor SCRAM, where the control rods go into the core both on gravity and spring loading), huge valves isolating the coolant loops from the reactor would have gone shut, and emergency cooling, which, in a Navy plant is based upon NATURAL CONVECTION, would have kicked in ... the plant would be in a safe condition. If such a design were used in a civillian power plant, there would be other events such as the main steam root valves going to the turbines would have gone shut and possibly the steam stops, and breakers would have opened up as well, isolating the generator from the transformer bank. The plant would not be operational, but it would have put itself in a safe condition. There is no reason that a civillian plant can't be designed that way, especially considering the possibility of using Thorium in a breeder to produce U233.

WHY IS THIS AND WHAT IS THE PLAN??????????????????????????????

Pure speculation, based on all that I have read on the web, seen in mainstream media, etc... first, it is a given that the powers that be want centralized control over power generation, there are many vested interests that would be hurt if there were all of a sudden extremely economical decentralized power production, with megawatt hours for less than 1 US Dollar at its current value. Furthermore, there seems to be a plan to keep energy prices high ... by limiting coal, by insisting upon only the highest quality lowest sulfer antracite coal for power plants (even tho the tech exists to use the sulfur as a byproduct these days, a modern coal plant doesn't put out sulfur dioxide), by regulating the nuclear industry to death, by not allowing newer and safer designs of reactor plants, by not funding EFFECTIVE research into fusion (the same old non workable test plants get the funding) etc, etc. Solar and wind are limited, geothermal will take some political will ... for instance, the magma chamber under the super volcano caldera at Yellowstone could supply all of the power needed from the tip of Argentina to northern Canada if it were developed ... and it would be a means of removing energy from a potentially threatening super volcano at the same time. Of course, that would never happen. Anyways, the idea is to create demand ... the answer will be something that requires big government, internationalism, and centralize control ... Helium 3 to Helium 4 fusion, the Helium 3 being plentiful on Luna (Earth's moon) which creates an excuse for the next phase of space development.

Why go that route???? Centralized control, the same big money interests will keep on making big money while the planet moves away from petroleum, an excuse for high tech that nevertheless keeps people dependent upon the system, and space exploration under the control of big govt./big corporations. IF there is something to the whole question of exopolitics, that is, an ongoing, top secret progam with various races of ET's ... this is a route that will allow us to eventually "discover" them on their home planets, which would be the "acceptable truth" to tell humanity.

Thorium is THAT plentiful? Wow! I'm going start a small campaign regarding our government and our international expertise in nuclear energy. We are a world leader in nuclear power, we need to set an example.

Maybe Atomic Energy Canada is stuck on the CANDU because it breeds plutonium for ther New World Order Chaos? :confused2:

Now that there's radiation again ...

TOKYO—Japan's rarely seen emperor urged the stricken country not to give up, saying he was "deeply concerned" about the unfolding nuclear crisis. It was an unprecedented video address that underscored the extraordinary events unfolding since Friday and tapped into the nation's tense mood.

Very interesting stuff about that thorium! Twice the power than from uranium AND is uses old, spent fuel to work? WTF! We had better get back control of our governments before they kill everyone or turn us all into useless eaters and the working (and enslaved) poor! :grouch:

Also, just in (post reply), "CANADA'S CANDU REACTORS ARE CURRENTLY CAPABLE OF USING THORIUM AS A FUEL" -from the Wiki link above. Oh really???? REALLY??? Then WHY HAVEN'T THEY?????

Godzilla has displayed an uncanny ability to resist injury. Not even the pressure and cold of deep sea trenches can kill him. Starting in the first Godzilla film, Godzilla displayed an immunity to conventional weaponry, virtually impervious to the JSDF's attacks and he is even shown to be resistant to technology from the future. He has demonstrated the ability to survive complete submersion in magma for an extended period of time. He has even survived being in ground zero of asteroid impacts and being buried under tons of ice for years at a time, seemingly cut off from any oxygen source. His hide has been breached only occasionally

Should maybe just send Godzilla down to the trenches and have him adjust the continental plates.

It ain't over until the fat lady...
True... Well, yesterday I saw no hope at all. Indeed I saw them dropping water on the #3 reactor from helicopters. Presumably aiming for the spent fuel pool that was/is dry as a bone there.. But is that pool even open so that water dropped from above gets in? - Well, maybe the 'lid' blew off in the explosion..

Anyway seeing the helicopters on this mission in futility spelled doom for me. The pilots obviously afraid of the radiation, so they didn't dare to hover close and low enough to actually hit the target.

Actually, the more I read about thorium the more complicated the whole subject of thorium fuel becomes. Politics, future interests, weapons breeding potential, on and on (see my previous reply for the WIKI link).

Apparently thorium is a slow neutron acceptor and splits when these slow neutrons are available, like from spent reactor fuel. However, weapons grade U233 is created, making it a bomb material producer. Maybe this is why the nuclear industry is stuck on uranium for reactors: it's more scarce and therefore more easily controlled? :confused2:

Unfortunately, fricken India was sold some CANDU's after signing (ha ha) a non weapons grade processing facility and promptly started manufacturing weapons grade plutonium. NOW, they are the world's leader in developing thorium reactors which produce lots and lots of highly fissionable U233. Oh good job Canada (dumb asses!). I for one, trust India as much as I trust any other nuclear power; not at all. Unfortunately, India has a reputation for blitzkriegs (Pakistan) including the rape of hundreds of thousands of Pakistani women. NOT the kind of good ol' Joes the world would want armed with nuclear weapons.

Sweet Mother of Goid In Heaven!.... we need a massive amount of prayers for these Japanese people and ourselves! :bigcry:

I am having trouble holding back the grief. It was announced a while ago that reactor # 2 had indeed also exploded. It is predicted that a melt down is occuring and that the steel vessel underneath the reactor may be leaking "on fire" radioactive material. Now reports of a fire in the number 4 reactor, GOD!That's 4 out of 4 reactors! Local residents are advise to stay indoors, turn OFF all ventilation and remove all clothes fromn the outside. What about the locals who lost their hom,es in the tsunami? Where are they to go????

We are fools, toying with powers beyond our responsibility as a civilization to properly control, all for the want of lots and lots and lots money, somehow.

Some mystics and New Agers insist that Atlantis did in fact exist and had a similar fate,; that they misused an energy source that powered their civilization and destroyed themselves. Really, how far are we from that, right now?

WHO IN THE FUCK WAS STUPID ENOUGH TO CONSTRUCT NUCLEAR POWER REACTORS AND PLANTS IN THE MOST EARTHQUAKE PRONE ZONE IN THE WORLD????????? H F! God have mercy on us all!

footnote added five minutes after posting: If it all wasn't bad enough, a nuclear reactor reasearcher and designer just announced that Reactor 3 uses a mixed fuel, which included PLUTONIUM, hugely more deadly if released into the atmosphere. God help us, when will this human designed disaster all end?!!!!

If you think this is bad, check out the following web page: http://www.gregpalast.com/

Here are the facts about Tokyo Electric and the industry you haven't heard on CNN:

The failure of emergency systems at Japan's nuclear plants comes as no surprise to those of us who have worked in the field.

Nuclear plants the world over must be certified for what is called "SQ" or "Seismic Qualification." That is, the owners swear that all components are designed for the maximum conceivable shaking event, be it from an earthquake or an exploding Christmas card from Al Qaeda.

The most inexpensive way to meet your SQ is to lie. The industry does it all the time. The government team I worked with caught them once, in 1988, at the Shoreham plant in New York. Correcting the SQ problem at Shoreham would have cost a cool billion, so engineers were told to change the tests from 'failed' to 'passed.'

The company that put in the false safety report? Stone & Webster, now the nuclear unit of Shaw Construction which will work with Tokyo Electric to build the Texas plant, Lord help us.

There's more.

Nice Discourse, Gentlemen!

Hey, nice posts on this thread!

Pete, thanks for your lucid and factual info. Way to go!

I mentioned thorium on the other thread, “8.9 Earthquake in Japan” . . . but that thread got shouted down by certain “negative know-it-alls.” :duh:

As I mentioned on that thread, the first commercial nuke plant producing electricity in the world (U.S.) was a thorium based plant . . . but the other perceived need at the time was for weapons grade fissionable material, so the thorium tech was abandoned in favor of uranium so the boyz could make their bombs in abundance :duh:

And yes, there is far more thorium and more easily available than uranium . . . indeed one of the “problems” of mining rare earth elements is the thorium “waste” that is generated :p Maybe the boyz will re-think that now . . .

One of my gurus is Jack Lifton. He is the pre-eminent expert on rare earth elements and thorium. Google him.

Here’s what google shows on “Jack Lifton, thorium”:
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp...x=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=ca8cfe5d59ff26b

Take your pick of articles. All good stuff.

Also very glad to see some rational comment on “Cold Fusion.” This is another hobby-horse of mine, on which I’ve posted on ESMB.

This subject is one of the great travesties and tragedies of modern times.

Here’s two links for those interested:

This first one is in memory of my friend Gene Mallove. He blew the whistle on the fraudulent “study” conducted at MIT that was funded and used by the US Dept. Energy to discredit “Cold Fusion” before a Congressional Inquiry looking into possible government funding of the subject. Gene was murdered.

Gene was on the faculty of MIT, and when he discovered the fraud and was unable to get an ethical resolution of it at the university, he resigned.

In simple terms, the DOE funded a “study” by the professor in charge of the “Hot Fusion Research” department at MIT . . . who was also an expert in nuclear fission matters. This guy was a known (ill informed) outspoken opponent of the notion of “Cold Fusion.” (His $250,000 a year job would end if Cold Fusion was real.) Fact is, he conducted the studies and actually himself got extra energy . . . but then fraudulently altered his data to present that no extra energy was obtained.

I have copies of the original and fraudulently altered data secured in my archives. The facts in the above paragraph are real.

Mallove wrote of all this in his book: Fire from Ice: Searching for the Truth Behind the Cold Fusion Furor

You’ll also be able to read more about the continuing research and developments on Cold Fusion at the above link and the one below. I don’t have the time for the moment to do a full write up for this thread . . . I wish I did as I see some real interest and sensible discourse here.

Here is the site dealing with continued Cold Fusion development: http://www.lenr-canr.org/

Nuclear plants the world over must be certified for what is called "SQ" or "Seismic Qualification." That is, the owners swear that all components are designed for the maximum conceivable shaking event, be it from an earthquake or an exploding Christmas card from Al Qaeda.
Well, that's probably not worded accurately.. I can 'conceive' of shaking events that will send nuclear plants flying and landing upside down anywhere in the adjacent neighborhoods.. Ahrmm..

And actually.. The Fukushima plant has held up nicely, given that it was hit by a richter 9 quake, followed by a large tsunami..

Hmm.. You could say that this isn't a nuclear accident at all. It's a quake and tsunami accident that destroyed a nuclear plant.. Small difference you might say, but consider: There's a train missing still, swept away by the tsunami and probably buried in mud somewhere, passengers and all. That is not in the news as a horrible railway accident with alarmist advice to cease operating trains..

Allright.. I could find things to critizise about this nuclear plant in Japan. Not the construction or safety of that.. But storing spendt fuel for 20 years in the reactor building instead of getting it to somewhere else.

I worry lots about what's happening now at Fukushima. But I'm not seeing this as any reason to stop using nuclear power at all.

We've seen 2 'major' accidents with Nuclear power: Three Mile Island and Tjernobyl.. Three Mile Island had a partial meltdown, with no serious contamination. The contaiment actually worked as designed.. Tjernobyl was real stupid. The plant had no containment of the reactor at all..

There are more than 400 nuclear plants in operation in the world delivering valuable and needed power.. Without generating any greenhouse gas'es either.

Just like that one Japanese monster flick from the early 60's where Mothra, Rodan, and Godzilla (oops, I meant "GODZIRRA!") teamed up to fight some other monster, if we could just get the three of them together again to fight this nuclear catastrophe ... Mothra, the radioactively modified giant catterpillar, could ride on top of Rodan, the supersonic jet propelled radiation modified Ptereodoctl, shooting all that spunk looking stuff over the downed reactor plants to contain them. Godzirra could then go in and stomp out the remaining fires. Tokyo would be saved. Kirin beer on the house for everyone, to wash down the sushi with. Oops, oh no, the sushi is radioactive, that means more monsters in the not too distant future!

Here's something to piss-off sane and decent folks.

You guys are probably well aware that potassium-iodide is indicated for folks being exposed to "radiation leaks" . . . . indeed during the Chernobyl disaster the locals were given it in the liquid form form of "Lugol's Solution"

Potassium-iodide is simply a method of safely filling the thyroid with iodine so it does not so easily absorb or suck in the radioactive versions and mimics.

So the list price of a pack of 14-tablet pack: $5.99.

Take a look at what the gouging panic making artists in the US are asking on Amazon.com!
Here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...w?ie=UTF8&qid=1300379372&sr=8-8&condition=new

Asking prices $300-$400!"

Easier, cheaper and better to take kelp powder daily with your food.

It is to be noted the Japanese regular daily intake of iodine in their diet is in the order of up to 40 times that of Americans.

The last time I bought Lugol's Solution was in 1989, a pint cost me $16 from memory . . . . I still have at least a half of it. It's useful for all sorts of good things

Not that we in the US are currently in need of dosing ourselves with this stuff to ward off the Japanese nuke stuff . . . . but the truth is, it is a wise move to be sure your daily intake of iodine is adequately high for simple good health reasons.
