email hacks

Hi - I have had 2 email hacks that I don't know how to explain - perhaps you can.

The first I think was an OSA operation - a few years back my inbox was deleted. I was flipped out, thinking I had done it some how, but each day after 8 days had elapsed that day's email was delete ( for example when I checked my email on March 24 , March 16 had disappeared, and on March 25, March 17 disappeared) It was driving me crazy and Norton, and email providers couldn't figure it out. When I changed my email password, it stopped.

The second happened a few days ago - I had invoiced a client. The book keeper called me up - they had gotten an email from me requesting it be wire transferred to Texas. I asked her to forward the email to me - it never arrived. So I had her send it to my wife's email. She got it fine. But when I tried to forward it from my wife's email to mine, it again never arrived.

So I changed my password, had my antivirus do a deep scan and the anti virus tech support do a debug on my computer. Called my bank and gave them the wire transfer address. So far, it seems the threat is gone.

What I don't understand is how that hack worked. Was there something hidden in the email that redirected it? Or a virus was put into my computer despite having anti virus soft ware?

Any explanations? Google searching for an answer was fruitless.

I had to buy a new computer after some remote terminal took over my address line and I'd watch someone typing in other websites while logged on to the ESMB a few years back. I bought a new computer and stayed off the board for quite some time, it's never happened again though so I really can't say how it happened. I had been getting emails that may have been tainted with a remote access program from a fake ex who was seen a year later at an event dressed up in his see morgue finest.

Back up your computer. If you have a spare computer test the back up on that one.
Once you have verified the back up, scan the back up with anti-virus software. Reinstall the back-up with the command to wipe your hard drive and reinstall. Should fix the problem. You have to back-up the entire PC, not just folders. It is often easier for anti virus programs to find viruses that can't move and can't disguise themselves because they don't have the resource of the operating system in the back-up.

It sounds a lot like a "man in the middle attack".

It happend to me yesterday..while I was checking my hotmail with thunderbird, I transfered a mail in my ''to keep'' box , but instead it disappeared..couldn't be found in deleted mails or any other box. I checked on the hotmail server and this mail had disapeared...and had to recover it with a few manip.

Few minutes ago, while I was logged on esmb..there was a sort of remote trojan hacking my mouse tracking arrow and changed it for something else unusable...So I logged of..rebooted the system and will perform a malwarebytes cleaning today. (recently, I went on a website (for natural products) that was not active anymore and I was redirected to a page with porn videos ....I knew at that time I would have problems within the next few days....and it did happened...

While doing a search about mail disapearing, I found it happens here and there with hotmal, outlook, gmail etc..whitout any explanation...

AFAIAC I don't relate these weired things on OSA...frankly I am a nodoby and OSA won't spend a penny to dare botther me...I am just a tiny bug.....and they don't have anymore all those people to watch over those thousands and thousands of critics on this planet and this guhluxy...However, Trojan and key logger are everywhere on internet , screening for a vulnerable computer...

It's quite scary reading about the problems some are having with strange goings-on with their computers. Either I've been very lucky so far or my computer is infected with a better class of virus that has remained undetected heretofore. I haven't got any anti-virus software installed and all I'm relying on is windoze Action Center anti virus/spyware, but I have never noticed anything untoward with my PC and I spend all day looking at porn (joke).

I'm having more trouble with scammers 'phoning me up pretending they're from my ISP or my bank. Tossers!

Damn, we must be related as that's all I'm using since I cancelled my subscription to Malwarebytes earlier in the year. $49.99 for a new download of their program... So far so good and Windows action center regularly catches viruses and shows me what they are and tells me they are in quarantine. Norton 360 was the program that bogged my system down so bad I had to uninstall it.

Hey, I don't know if you'd know but where is Sheila? We had such a wonderful meeting of the minds and got some things off our chests 3 or 4 days ago and sincerely apologized for a rough patch we'd had and then when I had more I'd thought about and she ups and vanishes. Oh well, she does tend to come and go as I'm sure she's a busy lady with her changing schedule, clients and all the hard work. I'm sure it must be easier than she was used to in the sea org or it would seem at least that it would have to be... She'll rejoin us on her own schedule I'm sure.

Commodo Internet and security software is excellent and it is free. There are pay-for versions so google Commodo free in your search. it has caught many things before they happened. It is programmable to some degree but not necessary.

I got rid of Norton because it acted like a virus after a while and one time Norton itself was compromised. I unistalled it as fast as I could and during the uninstallation, it was only then, that Norton recognized it was corrupted. Commodo has another program called security essentials that will find deep threats if they get in.

The big name pay-for software is very questionable these days as regards security. I think McCafee makes its own threats. Malwarebytes has declined quite a bit. They used to be top notch but they have changed it so much it doesn't function well anymore.

Set it and forget it software is very risky, they often break without you knowing it. Doing manual updates helps make sure it isn't broken.

Mims -- you are not using a 100%-foolproof AV program, whatever it is.

If you dig around and find a good techie AV site (I've used one years ago), you can find a general malware-deletion post. It would have maybe a dozen steps, using several different well-known AV programs. Often one of the later steps includes posting a log-file from one of these apps and a local expert (just like we help random people with queries about Scn) will suggest pinpoint tech advice.

Don't worry, she'll be back!
No doubt she doesn't hold a grudge against you, since you are always decent good-natured, and she too, usually, quickly mooves on!

If people are on windows 10..there is no need for any other anti-virus..windows defender does the job.
I am on window 7 and sometimes, here and there, catch a remote stuff, especially, when, Like Mr Stratsky, I lurk on porn sites..He is luckier than me :D
(Ah Ah..kidding...)

I used to check out porn sites, mostly to see if there was anybody that I knew!!!!
Yeah I know she'll be back but as I realize that sometimes I push the envelope I tend to self over correct when I start thinking maybe I went too far and said something that could be taken in other ways than what I intended or anticipated.
I've got Windows 64bit Vista, I think anyway, where does that leave me for anti virus? I am already going to check out Free's suggestion.

If you see some ESMBers on your sites...please let me know.. we can start a religion (blackmailing businness).. :p

If you get window vista, then surfing on internet without an antivirus, is like playing in porn movies without a safe..
Seriously, you need to protect your machine and datas..

Either
Free Kaspery antivirus
or Free bitdefender shall be fine

https://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html

And download the free malwarebytes to clean it , now and monthly basis...
and in case of some serious infection, or weird behavior..it's a cleaning tool that does the job.
That should be fine.

Oh, a wise guy,eh?
Someone came to me because her laptop was messed up. She had taken it to an acquaintance who used Norton on it and found nothing. He suggested the hardware was at fault. I ran Avast on the laptop. Avast found 15 viruses and cleaned it up. Laptop was fixed. Avast Antivirus is a Google product and it is free.

Norton is the worst anti-virus that ever existed..It's heavy, taking lot of ressources, act itself like a virus and not the least, isnotdoing the job at all.
Stay away of Norton.

A few yers ago I was relying only on AVAST and AVG...
but still believe Bitdefender and Kaspery are a step further in terms of product and performers.

If you use it make sure you do a full scan. The first full scan will take a long time. Turn on the full scan before you go to bed and check the shut down computer after scan box unless you don't want to. Subsequent full scans will be shorter as it eliminates trusted programs and folders.

I have logged on and found it scanned on its own and caught something. Click the execute suggested action. It will quarantine the item. It also allows you to use a virtual desktop. It has a virtual run box to open files and programs in that contains anything from happening. All instructions are online and available by clicking help. Quick scans are about 120 seconds and full are about 45 minutes after a few times.

I've had this new computer about 18 months now and in all that time I've never heard a peep out of Action Center regarding viruses and malware. Whenever I look it tells me 'No current issues detected'. Maybe all those dodgy sites I visit don't have the viruses we've been warned about. LOL.

I think I will take a look at installing some kind of AV software though. My old computer slowed to a crawl because of it, but this one has much more grunt and should handle it much better.
