Ireland gets new Scientology office

Discussion in 'Breaking and Major News about Scientology' started by John McGhee, Sep 24, 2016.

    A new scientology "national affairs office" (whatever that means) sets up in the same square as the original dianetics centre as opened by hubbard here in the 50s. Given that the population of scientologists in Ireland doesn't exceed 40 (being generous here) and that they all live in the greater Dublin area, it is is a mystery as to the use to which this building will be put. According to the attached article the property was selling for a cool €1.8 million, it was a steal in comparison to its boomtime price of several million. However, SP sources are coming back with info that it was purchased for €400,000

    Maybe there is no actual function for the property and this is just Miscavige spending the money that comes in so he is not accused of hoarding money.

    At 7am this morning John McGhee was outside Scientology's new National Affairs Office at 4 Merrion Square, Dublin to check on progress. While he was taking photos the door opened and a painter-decorator came outside for a chat, during which he told John that the new owners would be moving in on 1st October.

    I can hardly stop laughing! A group that can barely muster a parochial presence opens a National Office?

    The Irish Times: What will Scientology’s new Dublin office do?

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/soci...-scientology-s-new-dublin-office-do-1.2827288

    * * * * * BEGIN EXCERPT * * * * *

    The Church of Scientology opens a national affairs office at 4 Merrion Square today, making Dublin only the second city in the world, after Washington, DC, to have such a presence.

    The new office is said to house five permanent staff from the Sea Org, Scientology’s elite group, whose members sign billion-year contracts pledging future lifetimes to advancing their religion.

    There will also be five permanent members of the Office of Special Affairs, which manages several of the church’s front groups but is perhaps best known for managing its intelligence-gathering and lobbying operations.

    The Merrion Square premises was bought in June 2015 for a price believed to be close to €2 million. It will serve as “a PR base to host VIPs and government officials”, as Gerard Collins, an Irish Scientologist, announced on social media.

    The role of the national-affairs office in the US capital is to try to “create a positive narrative about Scientology and keep down the critics”, says Jon Atack of the Open Minds Foundation, a UK organisation.

    [SNIP]

    In Ireland the Church of Scientology is a registered company that has failed to obtain charitable or religious status.

    [SNIP]

    There are historical links between Scientology and Merrion Square. In 1956 Hubbard briefly installed what he called the Hasuk Atomic Energy Healing Division Emergency Station at number 69, to provide a base for his followers should the UK come under nuclear attack.

    The organisation’s return to the square six decades later has a different motive, according to Duignan. “This office will be building up the efforts to bolster Scientology’s position within Ireland. On the surface they will be cleaning up a park or a beach, some kind of PR activity, while making sure to get their picture taken with the mayor or councillor, photos that can be used for internal and external public relations.”

    In Duignan’s experience the office’s core activities tend to be less conspicuous. The procedure, he says, “is to hire private investigators and find out all about the political and social interests of a specific person, as well as their dirty little secrets, in order to compile a dossier on them. Their strategy from there is to reel that person in, little by little, by contributing a certain amount of money to his or her next campaign or by obliging to do favours for them.

    “Eventually they will come up with a proposal in return,. say to push to get Scientology recognised as a church in Ireland,” Duignan alleges.

    It remains to be seen how the Dublin office will work, but Atack agrees with Duignan about how the organisation typically operates. “They tend to sneak in. You first of all profile a politician, find out where they go and what their habits are. You put somebody next to someone in a position of power and sweet-talk them, all according to Hubbard policy.”

    Chatting to someone whose business card described them as ‘The Way to Happiness Co-ordinator’, I was told about the plans for the new office. She explained that this would be a secular branch of the church, not trying to convert people but just helping with social issues. She particularly stressed that they would be fighting for our human rights, human rights we don’t even know we have. The room was very loud so I couldn’t get more detail on that.

    [SNIP]

    The Church has very clearly sized up Ireland’s problems and is keen to employ its methods to deal with them. What exactly that looks look like is less clear.

    Saturday’s events gave the impression that the Church of Scientology’s National Affairs Office is on a mission and nothing is going to get in its way.

    Ireland now has a Scientology National Affairs office, and not a clue why

    [SNIP]

    We’re glad the Times picked up on what a waste of expensive real estate this facility is. Scientology was practically dead in Ireland when church leader David Miscavige came up with the idea of opening this office. But keep in mind, if it seems futile for Scientology to pretend it can affect Ireland’s national affairs with five flown-in staff members in a building that will stand otherwise empty most of the time, the real purpose of this white elephant is the same as all the other empty buildings that Miscavige has been opening around the world in recent years. He does these things simply so he’ll have something to tell the big donors at the next big international event.

    In other words, it’s another empty public relations exercise. Jazzed up with the Jive Aces.

    * * * * * END EXCERPT * * * * *

    I disagree with Tony on this. As I've tried to document in other threads, one of the most effective things the Church of Scientology is doing right now is use the U.S. Church of Scientology National Affairs Office to build relationships and alliances with churches, religions, and civil rights groups in the U.S. I'm sure the Ireland Church of Scientology National Affairs Office will do the same thing. The COS is nothing if not persistent, and it has now proved itself capable of playing the long game.

    In America, the church (which is not registered here as a charity) has public streets shut down for grand openings, but since that isn't possible in central Dublin, they relied on heavy-handed security - one Scientologist told me I would "get myself in serious trouble" for standing on Merrion Square. As the mob spilled out onto the street and gardai arrived on the scene, a third Scientologist had a taxi hold up traffic on the square itself, causing a long, if brief, tailback. (I was later told she was merely "inquiring about a fare").

    There will be 12 full-time staff members at the new Dublin office, but a spokesman for the church refused to answer questions about how the roughly €2m purchase price of such a prestigious address - minutes from government buildings - was financed last year.
