/hattip Steve Hassan on facebook. Cross-posting from WWP: https://whyweprotest.net/community/...bill-legal-recourse-for-disconnection.109566/

Disconnection must be stopped. This looks like a major step in the right direction.

http://njsafeandsound.com/

Recourse for Ruptured Relationships
To Defend the Integrity of the Family

Has someone outside your family turned your son or daughter against you?

Has someone tried?

Do you know a family that has been hurt by an alienating influence?

If so, you are not alone.

Such destructive relationships can devastate not only the people being manipulated, but also the family members and friends who love them. Time alone typically does not heal the alienation caused by this predatory behavior.

Presently there is nowhere for loving, responsible families to turn when they are attacked from outside — when a family member over the age of 16 is maliciously manipulated and turned against them.
Help Is On the Horizon

Concerned citizens are working with New Jersey State Senator Loretta Weinberg (D-District 37) to draft legislation to better protect families. The bill under consideration would create a civil cause of action to enable parents to seek court-ordered steps to restore healthy family connections and to recover damages against any person whose severe or pervasive conduct disrupts the parent-child relationship up to age 18. Protection ultimately may be extended to include those over age 18, as well as the elderly. Read the Draft Bill.

More at the link, including...

Sign the NJ Safe & Sound Petition to demand that families be given the right to stand up to those who maliciously turn loved ones against them. If you live outside New Jersey or outside the United States, you can still support this initiative by signing the petition and indicating your place of residence. The hope is that other states and nations will follow New Jersey’s lead in creating laws to protect families.

Encourage anyone who has had a close family relationship ruptured by an alienating influence to fill out one of the confidential questionnaires above.

Share Your Experience

To document the need to give parents the right to defend their families from inappropriate external influence, NJ Safe & Sound is collecting case studies from families who have suffered this trauma. Please fill out one of our confidential questionnaires if you or a loved one have been affected.

Are you the parent, guardian, or relative of someone who has been or is now being alienated from you?
If so, please fill out Questionnaire A.

Have you been or are you now being turned against your parents or family?
If so, please fill out Questionnaire B.

Do you know of an alienation outside your own family in which someone has been or is now being turned against his or her family by an external influence?

If so, please fill out Questionnaire C
http://njsafeandsound.com/questions-c.html.

Please consider signing the petition. And if your family has been broken up by disconnection - send in those questionnaires

For those under 18 yrs old this will probably work. For adult children? Not a snowball's chance in hell.

From Lori Hodgson on Facebook:

First of all I would like to thank my dear friend Heidi Macavoy for sharing this important article on "Recourse for Ruptured Relationships". Since I recently discovered that Rick Melrose influenced my children to disconnect from me and my family, I filled this petition and survey out. Please Family and Friends can you take a moment to fill this out and sign the Petition. If you have any questions please private message me. All families that have had disconnection spread the word. This could really help get the ball rolling on the momentum to get our families back together.
Thanks!!
Much Love, Lori

:bump2: Finally, some news on this front, as well as some extremely useful resources for those who still have loved ones stuck in Scientology or are trying to understand what they were caught up in after leaving Scientology.

The NJ Safe & Sound organization was prominently featured at this year's annual ICSA conference that I was fortunate enough to attend. They hosted an expert panel discussion called Undue Influence 101 that was extremely informative. Even better, they have now released the video segments online for informing the public.

Part 1: The Multiple Faces of Undue Influence - cult exit counselor Bill Goldberg explains how cults use persuasion and thought reform techniques to exert undue influence over their victims. If you only watch one segment, this is definitely the one you do not want to miss. Mr. Goldberg goes over cult-related material from Robert Ciadini's seminal work on the psychology of persuasion that has been covered fairly well with other destructive cults, but unfortunately I've never seen someone apply those concepts specifically to Scientology.

Part 2: Understanding Undue Influence: Manipulation and Coercive Persuasion - Steve Hassan, director of Freedom of Mind Resource Center, explains the difference between constructive and destructive influence, and the elements of his BITE model of control. For those who have read any of Hassan's later books, this material will already be familiar to you.

Part 3: Mental Health Considerations for Families Confronted with the Alienation of a Loved One - Dana Wehle, a certified psychoanalyst and licensed clinical social worker who specializes in trauma related to undue influence, presents strategies for addressing the emotional needs of those left behind. If you only watch two segments, this is the next one you do not want to miss. Some of the topics Ms. Wehle touches on put some core aspects of Scientology indoctrination (Tone Scale, Reactive Mind, TRs) into a whole new light as far as seeing how dangerous those practices can be.

http://www.njsafeandsound.org/video_part3.html

(not available on Vimeo at this time)

Part 4: Question-and-Answer Session - Former Scientology NYC org Staff/SO member turned cult litigator Paul S. Grosswald, answers questions regarding the legal remedies available in cases of undue influence.

The later 25% of the video (sorry, no timestamps available) Includes an important update from NJ Safe & Sound lady re: the OP in this thread - whatever happened to the bill that was drafted in NJ for families ripped apart by cults? She explains the concerns and shortcoming that came up regarding the broad language in the draft bill, how it relates to an issue Grosswald spoke about regarding not being able to litigate disconnection scenarios, AND where their efforts as lobbyists trying to change this in NJ currently stand - THEY HAVE A NEW EXPERT REWRITING THE BILL.

If you find these videos useful, and/or you have suffered from Scientology's undue influence ripping your family apart, please see the NJ Safe & Sound home page section for "Share Your Experience" and submit the appropriate online questionnaire to allow their ongoing efforts to benefit from the knowledge they can glean from your heartbreak.

Thank you AnonLover.

This is excellent info for anyone that has been in a cult. Just started watching Steven Hassan's presentation.

I'll write more when I get a chance, just wanted to thank you. :)

Note for those who may not have followed the links - the part 3 and 4 segments are available directly on the NJ Safe & Sound website as embedded video that can't be shared on other sites. So you have to watch over there rather than here on ESMB.

Steve Hassan has now released an all inclusive version of the 4part series of ICSA conference session videos I posted upstream ITT. For those who watched the other videos, I believe the only new material here is the first couple of minutes where the NJ Safe & Sound lady introduces the conference, the session, the speakers etc. For those who haven't watched it yet, this link is quite handy for viewing everything all in one sitting.

And again - if your family has been ripped apart by disconnection, please visit the NJ Safe and Sound home page and complete the applicable questionnaire under "Share you experience" to help support the ground breaking effort these folks are trying to do to get legislation passed to prevent cults from destroying families. You do not have be from New Jersey, nor even a US citizen, to support this effort. You just have to lend your voice to the cause and take a few minutes to fill out a short list of questions.

bump for yet another GREAT educational tool and initiative from NJ Safe & Sound. From the latest post on their Facebook Page:

It’s Time To Be on “Mind-Hacking Alert”

As part of its educational outreach, NJ Safe & Sound has produced “Mind-Hacking Alert: A Young Adult’s Guide to Recognizing Undue Influence and Resisting Abusive Relationships.” This concise, trifold brochure teaches adolescents and young adults (and those who care about them) about the various degrees of social influence and how to protect themselves from undue influence and associated predatory behaviors.

The brochure will be made available to student life, counseling, and campus ministry departments at all the colleges in New Jersey; high-school guidance departments; and law enforcement and social service agencies. It is also available for downloading and printing from the NJ Safe & Sound website. (Links below. For best results, save the files to your desktop before printing.)

Please share “Mind-Hacking Alert” with your family and friends, and share this post on your social media channels.

NJ Safe & Sound was established to educate the public about extreme undue influence and predatory alienation, and to raise awareness of the need for legal protection from such abusive behavior. With your support, we can give every person, every family the information they need to protect themselves from exploitative relationships.

We need MORE of this sort of thing, in ALL states. But it's really cool that New Jersey - of all places - is raising the bar. The home state of Hubbard's first failed Dianetics center. One of the few states where Scientologists do not have an org of their own. AND best of all, where attorney Paul Groswald, former SO member and ICSA speaker, is now running for a political office where he might be able to help push through the revised draft legislation NJ Safe & Sound is working on.

It's been a few years in the making, but there is FINALLY a legislative update on the NJ Safe & Sound bill. This is a new version of their proposed undue influence law, completely overhauled and rewritten. AND it's active in both branches of the NJ legislature with a handful of respectable co-sponsors on each bill.

From: http://njsafeandsound.org/legislate.html
In a bipartisan effort, New Jersey Senator Loretta Weinberg (D-37) and Senator Gerald Cardinale (R-39) have co-sponsored S2562, requiring New Jersey’s Department of Children and Families and Department of Human Services to study predatory alienation and its effects on young adults and senior citizens (see below). The original co-sponsors are: Senator Christopher Bateman (R-16), Senator Anthony R. Bucco (R-25), Senator Steven V. Oroho (R-24), Senator Joseph Pennacchio (R-26), and Senator Samuel D. Thompson (R-12). On September 26, 2016, the bill was referred to the New Jersey Senate’s Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee.

On January 9, 2017, the bill was heard by the nine members of the Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. They unanimously voted in favor of it and issued the following statement in support of it:
www.njleg.state.nj.us/2016/Bills/S3000/2562_S1.PDF. The bill was subsequently co-sponsored by Senator Robert M. Gordon (D-38), Majority Conference Leader, and Senator Linda R. Greenstein (D-14), Assistant Majority Leader.

On January 13, 2017, the NJ Senate passed the bill with a vote of 37-0.

An identical bill was introduced into the New Jersey Assembly as A4244 and referred to the Human Services Committee on October 13, 2016. The primary sponsors are Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle (D-37) and Assemblywoman Marlene Caride (D-36). Co-sponsors are Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro (D-33) and Assemblyman Joseph A. Lagana (D-38).

On February 15, 2017, bill S-2562 was received in the Assembly. The Assembly version of the bill, A4244, picked up another primary sponsor: Eliana Pintor Marin (D-29).

Express your support for this effort by contacting the sponsoring legislators, as well as the members of both the Senate’s Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee and the Assembly’s Human Services Committee, given below:

This wonderful. Thanks anonlover.

I know just the place for evidence of the disconnections and accompanying "SP " declares. The ethics and reports section of orgs which have members who have disconnected from NJ citizens or residences.
Maybe requests by the study group would be ignored by those cliques however I am sure the must be some under the radar members across those states and even the country who would know of the existing mind-hacks.
Various ways to generate lists of such for interviews.
Local cable community lectures might be a good route, or local radio talk hosts might like the topic matter.

I hope this goes really well and that it spreads. All the way to Starbucks in Clearwater and LA.

According to the NJ Safe & Sound Twitter feed, they scored another state legislature win on March 23, 2017.

From: https://twitter.com/NJSafeandSound

News from the NJ State House! The Assembly's Human Services Committee voted unanimously in favor of A4244 & its companion Senate bill, S2562

S2562/A4244 was unanimously passed by the NJ Assembly today with a vote of 74-0!

Bill calling for a study of predatory alienation & its effect on young adults & senior citizens was just unanimously passed by NJ Assembly!!

From Senate bill sponsor: http://www.senatenj.com/index.php/c...redatory-alienation-passes-senate-panel/30764

The legislation, S-2563, directs the Department of Children and Families and the Department of Human Services to conduct a joint study and make recommendations concerning predatory alienation and its effects on young adults and senior citizens. Predatory alienation is the act purposefully disrupting an existing relationship, often through the use of deception, in order to isolate a person from the people that he or she trusts, for the purpose of exploiting, controlling, or taking advantage of that individual.

The study would focus on things like how online predators, human traffickers and other con artists use predatory tactics to isolate others from their families and friends. It will make specific note of why young adults and seniors are vulnerable to predatory alienation and research what they can do to protect themselves.

“This deceptive practice has the ability to tear even the most loving of families apart,” Senator Cardinale said. “If we can obtain a better understanding of how these manipulative predators work, we can formulate a plan to fight against them.”

Next step should be a signature from Governor Chris Christie. Here's hoping he watched Leah's show on A&E.

Although still only existing in 5 states Alienation of affection laws need to be studied. This in conjunction with Libel and Slander and hate laws which the CofS is definitely involved in when they extort and or blackmail and or use undue influence and coercion in their egregious efforts to usurp the liberty of conscience and association laid down in the Superior laws of the USA. Evidence abounds.....just read the exit stories of (ex) scientologists or watch A & E with Leah Remini.

This...

"Extremists, human traffickers, abusive partners, gangs, cults, swindlers, and other corrupt individuals and groups exert undue influence to exploit the trust, dependency, and fear of their victims to gain control over their decision-making. They use coercive control to isolate their targets so they can more easily manipulate and take advantage of them. In most instances, the law offers little help in protecting victims or prosecuting perpetrators."

It is a wonderful step accomplished. I hope NAAG http://www.naag.org is paying close attention.

The measure that Governor Christie signed into law requires the departments of Children and Families and Human Services to study the tactics used by predators to manipulate individuals, creating a wall between them and their family and friends. Study findings and recommendations are due to the Governor and Legislature within six months.

from the law itself

2. A report on the joint study’s findings and recommendations [ line 34 ]
shall be submitted to the Governor and, pursuant to section 2 of the [ Line 35 ]
P.L.1991, c.164 (C.52:14-19.1), to the Legislature no later than six [Line 36]
months after the effective date of this act [ Line 37 ]

The recent legislation in New Jersey to study the issue of cultic influence and coercion being used to disconnect or break up families is proceeding to the initial interview stage. If you are a victim of Scientology's practice of disconnection or the same sort of thing in another cult, please consider getting involved in this.

Today's big announcement from the NJ Safe & Sound Facebook page:
