Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief was an instant critical and commercial success when it first aired in March — it was HBO's highest-rated documentary premiere in almost a decade. Thanks to continuing "popular demand," the network is bringing the film back to theaters for a limited release on September 25th. Alex Gibney's adaptation of Lawrence Wright's book about the shadowy pseudo-church first hit the big screen at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where it was lauded for its comprehensiveness and intensity.

Indiewire: Look for 'Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief' on the big screen once again on September 25

As Alex Gibney's bombshell "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief," the documentary exposé of the Church of Scientology that dragged him through the gauntlet to get made, expands abroad, it's also returning to US theaters in time for an awards season bid.

HBO is re-releasing "Going Clear," which premiered at Sundance and debuted in theaters and on the network this Spring, on September 25 in California, DC and Chicago, as well as at New York's IFC Center, in Texas and across the country. This should put the controversial film—a profile of eight former members of the Church—back in viewers' minds as we head into the Oscar race. Can this salacious film pick up Academy heat in Hollywood?
